Which can be a fine line and a difficult balance.”This is part of a series of interviews with science communicators about science communication. Today we are Speaking to… Eimear O’Carroll from Restored HearingEimear O’Carroll is the co-founder of Restored Hearing, a start-up company that creates products to ease the suffering of those with tinnitus. I met Eimear at #ESOF2014, where she spoke on a panel called “Unconventional Science Innovators”. Her unconventional story was that she and a friend came up with their first product as part of a science fair whilst they were still in secondary school. After doing extremely well, they decided to start a company and sell their products. But this wasn’t quite as simple as it might have seemed. Starting a company needed a completely different mind-set to doing a science project, and it is something she is still (at the age of 23) trying to get her head around. I mainly wanted to speak to Eimear, because she talked about the importance of science communication when it comes to promoting her products and business. This wasn’t just to stakeholders, but also to potential customers. Eimear wrote a great blog post: Communicate your Hot as Hell idea to the world, which sums it up nicely. In this episode, Laura and I discuss what a community manager really is, how she got into this role, and the dilemma she faced when deciding to leave the world of academia for one of science communication. “If communicating about your science was what got you into science communication, why not stay as a scientist and communicate your own science?” This dilemma seems to be a frequent one, and for Laura, it wasn’t easy. She looks back at her younger self and feels that if there had been more digital, software based support for scientists, she may have made a different decision…could this be why she has gone to work with Digital Science? To help those in her position make this decision easier? For those interested in SpotOn, it starts on the evening of Thursday 7th with a Fringe Event – The Story Collider, hosted by Brian Wecht. http://speakingofscience.juliegould.net/science-communication/when-scientists-meet-the-public/feed/ 1 0:07:45 What happens when scientists, neuroscientists, meet the patients of the very diseases they explore in the lab? This podcast brings those two groups together Brain BankImage credit Jane BlackThis is a feature podcast about science communication: when scientists meet the public. By some lucky coincidence, I somehow managed to speak to some really fantastic people, and this podcast is the result. I’ve been putting together a podcast called Monsters inside your head, and it explores how patients with neurodegenerative diseases cope with their symptoms. A few months back I came across an event called Meet the Scientist, which was run by some Imperial College neuro-researchers at the Hammersmith Hospital. They had invited patients (along with friends, family and carers) to the department to get a tour of the labs, to meet the scientists, and to see the Tissue Bank – the real brains. What I found was that both groups (scientists and patients), benefited from this event. The patients got a glimpse of what goes on behind closed doors, how the scientists do their work, what it is they are focusing on. The scientists got to hear the patient stories, and benefited from the amazement that the patients had in their skills and abilities. So, as a result I’ve put a podcast together to let them tell the story about meeting each other, and what the event, Meet The Scientists, aimed to do. I’m going to let the patients and scientists talk for for themselves in this podcast. I really enjoyed putting this piece together, and I would really appreciate some feedback – any feedback: how did it make you feel? Did you like the style? Do you agree/disagree?I would like to thank Prof Richard Reynolds, Dr Amy Birch, Val and Ruth for giving up their time to share their stories with me. Scientific papers don’t seem to attract many readers outside the sphere of science when it comes to science communication. Yet the discoveries recounted in these papers play a pivotal role in some science-fiction stories, and these are read by people from all over the world. What if scientists were to tell their stories, as just that, stories? Would they be able to reach a wider audience? Would their work be more accessible? When we read dry, factual arguments, we read with our shields in hand. We are critical and skeptical. But when we are absorbed in a story we drop our guard. We are moved emotionally, and are drawn into the story-tellers’ world. I’ve been joined by Virginia Hughes, a journalist from Brooklyn, New York City, and in this podcast we discuss science and stories. Here is Virginia’s blog post Why more scientists should tell stories.
